In Farmers We Trust
LGA TV - Weekly Newsish Roundup
The La Grande Farmer’s Market opened its doors last Saturday! Now if you haven’t been to the Farmer’s Market, it’s a blast of fun, fruit, and local musicians available for the whole family to enjoy. There’s handcrafted jewelry, clothing, and even hand-made soap for you to peruse, buy, and use. And this week I got the opportunity to sit down with several members of the Farmer’s Market planning committee and chat with them about why you should head down to the market and buy local.

Now, the Farmer’s Market is open Saturdays from 9 am to noon and Tuesdays 3:30 pm to 6 pm. If you’re interested in knowing more about the market, they can be visited on this website. So gird your loins and break out your baskets, everyone, farmer’s market is open for the season!

Coffee With Will and Dale Mamman
LGA TV - Weekly Newsish Roundup
Have you ever wondered how to get things done effectively? I know as a recent-post-graduate the whole “adulting” thing can be a struggle sometime, especially in the area of getting things done successfully and effectively. But that’s okay because this week Dale Mammen, local entrepreneur and Liberty THeater foundation lead, sat down with me and talked about his four P’s of project development.

And Dale’s applying the 4ps in a big way to his current project, the Liberty Theater. The liberty theater is a old-as-dust historical theater in La Grande that Dale and his fellows are planning to restore. Recently they asked for some money in the form of budget allocation from the city of La Grande. But they got DENIED because, well, you’d have to ask the city council on that one. But that’s okay, said Dale, because patience and politics are two of this 4 ps. And the Liberty Theater is important enough, he said, to keep pushing which, hey, is another P!

The rest of this discussion is available on our LaGrandeAlive.tv facebook page.

Hey La Grande Alive. This is your weekly Newsish Roundup brought to you by Grande Ronde Hospital, Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Anything2Digital, EONI, Valley Realty, Country Financial, and Les Schwab Tire Center.

Challenging Walden
LGATV - Newsish Roundup
Michael Byrne is a stonemason. He was born in the Dalles and is a long-time resident of Hood River. He’s been a local ski instructor, a teacher, a coach, a Catholic Church member and a long time elected member of the Hood River PTA. Before Obamacare, he never had healthcare. When he was sick, he paid with cash. He dresses in a simple blazer with a cotton undershirt and from his slight frame you wouldn’t guess he carries, breaks, and crafts massive stones all day for a living. He’s a human being, just like you and me, an everyman. But what may or may not make him different than you is that he’s irately frustrated and fed up with Greg Walden, our local District 2 Politician who’s never, ever here and doesn’t represent our interests, he said.

There’s certain people you can tell are brimming with passion at any given moment. It’s in the eyes. And Michael is one of those people. And though La Grande Alive doesn’t necessarily agree with his opinions about Walden and otherwise, his interview was full of passion and care for the people of his small district in Eastern Oregon. And so, he’s running for office. He’s not a long-time politician, though, he’s just like you and me. And he’s fed up with the money and power saturating the public system. It takes the voice away from everyday folks, especially the underprivileged, he said.

Now, Byrne is running against Greg Walden for US Congress District 2. And when I asked, he said he didn’t quite know how he was going to get there. But ultimately he said that, if he won, all his votes would go toward giving people equal opportunity.

If you’d like to know more about Michael and his stance, you can visit his website. The entirety of his interview will be available on La Grande Alive for you to watch. And by the way, Greg Walden, if you’re out there, we’d love to have you into the studio to chat about why think you do represent us here in Eastern Oregon.

Big Buxton Is Watching!
LGATV - Newsish Roundup
Did you know that there are companies that analyze your credit card data and debit card spending records? Now, hold on shotgun, put away your slugs. It’s not the government or someone trying to sell you some cheap kitchen appliance. You don’t need to shoot anyone. Actually it’s companies dedicated to helping our community better do business by seeing where we’re spending money. And Buxton is one of those companies. And several years ago the City of La Grande Hired Buxton to find out what kind of items people were are buying locally, what kind of items people are traveling out of town to buy, and what people from other travel to our area to buy.

LGATV - Newsish Roundup Christine Jarskyc- Union County representativeThat was Christine Jarsky. She’s the Union County representative for the Buxton Study the city did several years ago and Brent sat down with her on Brent Chats this week to talk to her about Buxton. Now, most of the information the study gives us is pretty general. What economic areas we spend, what kinds of food we eat, those kinds of things. But some of it is very detailed: did you know we can tell what kind of mascara brand women buy within a 20 mile radius? And the trend information can be helpful. It can tell us, for instance, how Eastern Oregon differs from the national average on spen ding. Did you know that, in Eastern Oregon, were 20% higher than the national average in hunting sales? We’re also 20% lower in buying yoga supplies. Seems pretty straightforward, I know, but ultimately it’s very helpful for new and outside businesses to know if their store would succeed in our valley, including, restaurants.

Now, it’s a lot of data. And it takes some training to be able to decipher it. But, if you’re a current or possible local business owner and would like to know what this study says about your business, Christine said she’d be happy to sit down with you for free. The rest of this interview will be available on La Grande Alive in full.

Hello La Grande Alive. This is your weekly Newsish Roundup, brought to you by Grande Ronde Hospital, Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Anything 2 Digital, EONI, Valley Realty, Country Financial, and Les Schwab.

Central School Goes Global

LGATV - Newsish RoundupBack in my day, we had projectors in schools. We had transparencies. We had big old computers that looked like a bloated apples colored like the teletubbies. And now look at kids. They have screens. They have Chromebooks. They have giant wide screen televisions in every classroom so that they can watch what they’re writing on their iPads real-time! What ever happened to colored pencils? That’s what I want to know!

But you know what you can’t do with colored pencils? Work on collaborative projects with people across the globe. And truth be told that’s the world we live in. And those of us who think that kids may be a little bit spoiled these days have to come to terms with the fact that, if our kids are going to survive in the work world, they need to learn how to operate work with someone in another state or even another country. Global collaboration. And that’s the idea behind Central School’s new high-tech collaboration-stressed design. A place where kids can learn to live in the new tech-saturated world and work with other people instead of just doing things on their own.

The new central school building came about through a process of planning that is several years old. Originally, the administrators were considering just updating the old Central school to keep it running. But it wasn’t safe. So ultimately they decided to design and build a new high-tech school to bring kids into the modern world.

The school operates on what’s called the “Pod” method. Every grade has a “pod”. All the classrooms for that grade are in that pod. Then each pod has a “breakout room” into which kids from all classes can join together to collaborate. That way kids are learning to work with others outside their classroom.

The rest of Suzy Mayes interview will be available on La Grande Alive for you to watch. And be sure to poke your head into the Central School to see the screens, big, open halls, and the kids. I’m sure Suzie would be eager to show you around.

Superintendent Swap

LGATV - Newsish RoundupThere’s two new dudes in superintendent positions around the valley. Mr. George Mendoza has taken the position of superintendent in La Grande, and Mr. Earl *** is the new superintendent of the Cove school district. And this week I got to sit down with both of them and get introductions.

Now, these two men’s personalities are as far apart as Penn and Teller. Earl, Cove’s new superintendent, is ex-military. He’s brunt, confident, and to the point. All his sentences end with a period. George, La Grande’s new LGATV - Newsish Roundupsuperintendent, on the other hand, is softer spoken, gentler. He smiles a lot and before my interview he polished his shoes, if that tells you anything about his attention to detail and style. He’s soft like a armchair pillow: he makes you very comfortable to be sitting and talking to him. But ironically, though these two men put side by side would seem like completely different people, their leadership philosophies are actually quite similar.

Both of these interviews will be available in full on La Grande Alive. Both will be more active on La Grande Alive in coming times.

Boots and Lace and Horse

Okay, so I’ve done a lot about horses recently. I promise I’m almost done. But when I went out several weeks ago to cover Cloverhaven, I wanted to put together a longer piece about what’s so special about horses and why you should head out this weekend to their Boots and Lace fundraiser this weekend.

The fund-raiser is this Saturday out near Union. For more information about Cloverhaven, visit their website.

And one other quick sports highlight! Last week the Grande Ronde Open golf tournament was hosted out at the La Grande Country Club by the Grande Ronde Hospital foundation. And what’s the GRH foundation? Well, here’s Patrick Flynn telling you.

Now some of you may be asking, why Golf? Well I asked Patrick the same question and he had this to say.

Now, this tournament has been going for about 20 years annually. This year 69 golfers came together to play. The Amateur features 36 holes of individual stroke-play golf spread over three days, followed by a Sole Survivor competition on Sunday afternoon. The champions of the event were Jeff Neher of Walla Walla, who shot a gross 149, and Beccy Kramer of Imbler, who shot a gross 155.

Hey La Grande Alive! This is your weekly Newsish Roundup brought to you by Grande Ronde Hospital, Northwest Furniture and Mattress, Anything2Digital, and EONI!

Kickoff!
Alright! It’s a special almost-all-sports edition of the Newsish Roundup! Why? Well, this friday the La Grande High School Tigers kick off their football season with a super special game against Pendleton in Pendleton. Now, this is a special occasion. La Grande plays Pendleton every year but La Grande hasn’t played Pendleton in Pendleton since the coaches can’t remember. Every year the first pendleton games conflict with the Pendleton roundup. But since last year, the team has a new field. And this year the Tigers are traveling for their first game in P-Town in a lot of years, according to the coaches. And this week I had them into the studio to chat about the upcoming season and they said this game, because of how special it is, is all about attitude.

But it’s not all about attitude. Some of it’s about good, solid practice. And the coaches said that to prepare for this year’s season, they’ve also been putting the kids through some good-old-fashioned drills and repetitions.

The LGHS football team has 8 regular season games scheduled for this year against such notorious opponents as Pendelton, Baker, Sunnyside, Ontario, The Dalles, and McLoughlin. And the coaches said, if you can, you should attend all of them.

But, that being said, if you can’t some or even any of the games, that’s okay, we here at La Grande Alive have you covered! As we do every year, we’re going to be live-streaming all the games to our website and Facebook page every week. We’ll have scores, times, instant replays, the works. So be sure to tune in to LaGrandeAlive for all your LGHS football games, only on LaGrandeAlive.tv!

All Star Season!
Most of you all have probably heard by this point, the La Grande All Stars had a stellar season this summer. Making it all the way through local and state to the regionals competition, after an early loss to Walla Walla, the team came back two games in the regional championship winning 3-2 against Montana and 8-4 Washington. The team was ecstatic. But they just couldn’t bring it home, matching up again with Walla Walla for the regional championship, again, they lost 4-3 by a single run they just couldn’t come back from in the final inning. It was devastating. Here’s several pictures of the kids after the loss courtesy of the observer.

But everything isn’t lost. This week I got a chance to sit down with assistant coach Mitch Williams and listen to him talk very passionately about the memories of the season and, despite the loss, how proud of his boys he is.

And I think his pride in his sons is probably replicated for all the parents of this team.

MEDQUESTING
NEOAHEC is a company up at Eastern Oregon University that focuses on bringing health professionals to rural towns in Oregon. Here’s a quick clip from a local doctor about what NEOAHEC is and why it’s important.

Now, here’s the scoop: in June NEOAHEC is having what’s called their Med-Quest Camp. MedQuest is a week-long camp which invites kids and youths to come up, stay at EOU in the dorms, and job-shadow health professionals already practicing in their local towns. Here’s a quick video snippet they put together about the camp.

The event is open to all high school students completing grades 9-12 who are a interested in careers in healthcare. There is a cost to the camp, but there’s scholarships for those people who aren’t quite rich enough to afford it. But here’s the dealio: the deadline is march 16th so if you’re interested in signing up be sure to get ahold of them. They can be reached at their website or by phone at this here number.

UPCOMING EVENTS
So, what’s going on this week in the Valley? Well, Art Center East is hosting the upcoming exhibit called “So It Begins.” For some of Eastern Oregon University’s junior art students, this will be their first time in a gallery setting. The show includes paintings, ceramics and mixed media projects, and it will be held at, like I said, Art Center East.

This is the last weekend of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat at the Elgin Opera House and, let me tell you, it’s fantastic. Unless you’re a stuffy religious person who can’t handle when Bible stories aren’t told in KJV Old English direct translated from the Septuagint. Then don’t go. You’ll hate it, just like you hate everything else fun in life. For tickets, call the Elgin Opera House or visit their website.

If there’s one thing Anthony Lakes is good at having, it’s fun. And Anthony Lakes is having a Snow Blast celebration this Saturday that will include a dummy downhill race, a big air contest, potato sack race,  BBQ, live music and more! So throw on your snow pants and winter tires and drive up to Anthony Lakes this weekend for a food, tunes, and an overall good time!

SPORTS
In sports, the La Grande Tigers girl’s basketball season came to a close to moving on last Saturday but, for the first time since 2009, the lady Tigers won’t be dancing in March for the 4a OSAA playoffs. No. 3 seed North Bend used a huge third period to defeat La Grande 53-49 in the 4a state play-in game. Leading the way was Larissa Jensen who tallied 13 points.

The La Grande boy’s basketball team, on the other hand, earned the No. 1 seed into the OSAA 4a boys playoff two weeks ago when they defeated Ontario  69-53, winning the Greater Oregon League district title as well as the regular season title. La Grande is set to face 15th seeded Tillamook on Friday March 3rd (tomorrow) with tip scheduled for 6 pm.
